about

A custom soundtrack for the 1983 adventure game "Portopia Renzoku Satsujin Jiken", often translated as "The Portopia Serial Murder Case". It was designed by Yuji Horii of Dragon Quest fame and is something of a grandfather to the Japanese adventure game genre.

The game lacks any music, so I started listening to MIDIs of some music I had recently made, played through the GXSCC program to make them sound like they came from a Famicom game. I was surprised at how well they worked, and the idea came to me of creating an album featuring music based on the game.

Running with the idea that there wouldn't be many tracks in the game owing to its relatively small size, I made tracks based on crucial moments (hinted at by the title to each track, and explained further in the comments for each track).

Composed and arranged by Jim McGrath.

MIDIs originally made in MuseScore, and rendered through GXSCC.

"The Portopia Serial Murder Case" was created by Yuji Horii & Chunsoft, and is presumably owned by Square-Enix.
